Connections is a daily word puzzle where you group 16 words into 4 categories of 4. Each group shares a hidden connection — it could be anything from types of fruit to words that follow "fire". The challenge is figuring out which words belong together!

Because every puzzle is built ahead of time, we can study the archive as a whole. It currently holds 678 daily puzzles: 2,712 groups and 10,848 word slots drawn from 1,859 unique words, with an average answer length of 6 letters. Each puzzle has four difficulty tiers, color-coded yellow (easiest), green, blue, and purple (trickiest). How we build and check the puzzles is described on our about page.
The most useful finding: because the word pool repeats words across different categories, some words come back again and again. CLOCK appears in 51 different puzzles, COIN and HEART in 33 each, TREE in 32, BED in 29, and ONION in 28. These recurring words are usually the traps. The puzzle works by making one word look like it fits two groups, and a word that can sit in 51 different puzzles is exactly the kind of word that can sit in two of today's groups.
That data points to a stricter version of the usual advice: start with the category you can name out loud precisely ("types of X"), not the four words that merely feel related. If you can't finish the sentence, you probably haven't found the group yet. And expect the purple group to involve wordplay: homophones, hidden words, or "___ + word" patterns rather than plain meaning.
If you get stuck, the in-game hint button reveals 2 words from the easiest unsolved group (you get 3 free hints per day across all our games), and our daily hints page has spoiler-free help for today's puzzle.
