Daily Crossword Hints: How to Get Help Without Spoilers
There is nothing more frustrating than being stuck on a crossword puzzle with just one or two clues standing between you and a completed grid. You want help, but you do not want someone to just hand you the answer — where is the satisfaction in that? That is exactly why we built our daily Mini Crossword hints page, which uses a progressive hint system that gives you just enough information to break through without ruining the puzzle.

Get Today's Crossword HintsThe Problem With Traditional Crossword Help
Most crossword answer sites are all-or-nothing: they show you every answer at once. That approach turns "getting a little help" into "accidentally reading the entire solution." Once your eyes scan the answer grid, the challenge is gone. You cannot un-see a crossword answer.
Progressive hints solve this problem. Instead of revealing answers, they reveal information gradually — each level gives away a bit more while preserving as much of the challenge as possible.
How Our Progressive Hint System Works
Our crossword hints page offers 5 levels of assistance, from gentle nudges to full solutions. Each level is hidden behind a reveal button, so you never see more than you intended.
See the first letter of every answer. Often this single letter is enough to trigger the right word in your memory. For example, if the clue is "Citrus fruit" and you see it starts with L, "LEMON" or "LIME" jump to mind immediately.
Now you see both endpoints of each word. Knowing a 5-letter word starts with S and ends with E dramatically narrows the possibilities. Combined with the crossword clue, most players can solve it from here.
Nearly every letter is revealed with just one or two blanks remaining. At this point, the answer is nearly obvious — this level is for those truly stubborn clues.
Every across and down answer is fully revealed. Use this when you want to verify your completed grid or when you are ready to move on.
The complete filled grid is displayed visually, including black squares. This is the ultimate reveal for when you want to see exactly how everything fits together.
When to Use Each Hint Level
The key to getting the most enjoyment from crossword hints is using the minimum amount of help needed. Here is our recommended approach:
- Spend at least 5 minutes on the puzzle first. Many answers come to you if you give them time. Skip difficult clues and come back to them after you have more crossing letters filled in.
- Start with Level 1 for your stuck clues. Knowing the first letter often triggers the right association. Go back to the puzzle and try again.
- Use Level 2 only for clues that still stump you. First and last letters together are surprisingly powerful — most 3-5 letter words become obvious with both endpoints.
- Reserve Levels 3-5 for when you are truly stuck or when you want to verify a completed puzzle.
Crossword Solving Strategies (Before You Need Hints)
Before reaching for hints, try these proven crossword-solving techniques:
Start with the Fill-in-the-Blanks
Clues written as "fill in the blank" (e.g., "_____ of the crop") are almost always the easiest to solve. Knock these out first to get anchor letters in the grid.
Use the Crossings
Every letter in a crossword sits at the intersection of an across and a down word. If you cannot solve a clue directly, solve its crossing clues first. Even getting 2-3 crossing letters can make an impossible clue suddenly obvious.
Think About Word Length
A 3-letter answer has far fewer possibilities than a 5-letter one. In our Mini Crossword, answers range from 3 to 5 letters. For 3-letter answers, run through common short words mentally: ACE, AGE, AID, AIM, AIR, ALE, ALL, AND, ANT, APE, ARC, ARE, ARK, ARM, ART, ATE...
Watch the Tense and Part of Speech
Crossword clues are constructed so that the clue and answer match in tense and part of speech. If the clue is a past-tense verb ("Walked quickly"), the answer will also be past tense ("RACED"). If the clue is a noun, the answer is a noun.
Consider Multiple Meanings
Many crossword clues exploit words with multiple meanings. "Bank" could refer to a financial institution, a river bank, or banking an airplane turn. If your first interpretation does not work, think about alternative definitions.
Why Mini Crosswords Are Perfect for Practice
Full-size crossword puzzles (15x15 or larger) can take 30 minutes to an hour. Our daily Mini Crossword is a 5x5 grid that typically takes 2-5 minutes — perfect for a quick brain workout during a break. The smaller grid means:
- Faster feedback — you complete the puzzle quickly and learn from each solve
- Less frustration — fewer clues means fewer potential points of confusion
- Dense crossings — in a 5x5 grid, nearly every letter is crossed, so solving one clue always helps with others
- Daily variety — a new puzzle every day builds consistent practice
