Wordle hard mode adds a crucial constraint that transforms the game from a casual puzzle into a strategic challenge: Any revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses. This means:
Must appear in the same position in all future guesses. If R is green in position 2, every guess must have R in position 2.
Must appear somewhere in all future guesses, just not in the yellow position. If E is yellow in position 3, every guess must include E elsewhere.
Can never be used again in any position. These letters are completely eliminated from consideration.
You can't use "throwaway" guesses to test letters. Every guess must be a potential answer that uses all known clues.
Your opening word is even more critical in hard mode because you can't easily test additional letters later. Choose wisely:
Why these work: They provide enough information without creating impossible constraints for guess 2.
The trap: These words often give you clues you can't effectively use in hard mode's constraints.
Unlike normal mode, you must think multiple guesses ahead in hard mode:
Focus on locking down letter positions rather than just finding letters:
Guess 1: SLATE
Result: S green, A yellow, rest gray
Guess 2: SCAMP (tests A in different position with S locked)
Strategy: Prioritize confirming positions over finding new letters
Guess 1: AUDIO
Result: A, I, O all yellow
Problem: Now you must use all three vowels in guess 2
Result: Very limited valid word options
Track your constraints carefully to avoid dead ends:
Scenario: Guess 1 gives you 3-4 yellow letters
Result: You must use all of them in guess 2, but they can't go in the yellow positions
Outcome: Very few (or zero) valid English words exist with these constraints
Prevention: Start with balanced words (2-3 vowels max)
Recovery: If trapped, focus on the most common letters first
Pro Tip: Sometimes accepting a guess with lower information value prevents a trap
Double letters create unique challenges in hard mode:
Scenario: The answer is SLEEP
Understanding the difficulty increase helps set realistic expectations:
Your second guess in hard mode is often more important than your first:
Scenario: SLATE → S green, L green
Best Guess 2: Use S_L__ pattern with different vowels
Examples: SPLIT, SLUMP, SLICK
Goal: Test new letters while respecting constraints
Scenario: CRANE → R yellow, A yellow
Best Guess 2: Move them to most likely positions
Examples: PARTY, TRADE, BOARD
Goal: Convert yellows to greens quickly
Scenario: STARE → Only E yellow
Best Guess 2: Use completely different letters plus E
Examples: CHILD, NIMBLE, POULE
Goal: Maximum new information while including E
Make every guess count by maximizing eliminated possibilities:
Experienced players recognize patterns that indicate specific word families:
If you have ___ER or ___ED, focus on common starting patterns: B, C, F, H, L, T, W
Most words have vowels in positions 2 or 3. If yellows don't fit there, consider position 4
ST-, TR-, CR-, BR-, FL-, SL- are most common starts. Test these first with green positions
When stuck, guess words with highest-frequency letters. E, A, R, O, T appear most often
